The Center for Media at Risk is thrilled to welcome two Undergraduate Fellows, Naima Small and Anna Vazhaeparambil.
Naima’s project, titled, “#ProtectBlackWomen: Interrogating Black Women’s Culture of Dissemblance Through Instagram Hashtag Activism” explores the extent to which Instagram hashtag activism has allowed Black women to reclaim their vulnerability and end the silence around the reality of gendered violence within the Black community.
Anna’s project, titled, “Privacy, Protest, and Photojournalism: An Image Analysis of News Coverage in an Age of Surveillance,” will investigate news organizations’ photojournalism of protests from the context of potential threats to a free and critical press. Within the visual realm specifically, she will ask, how might the expectation of privacy in journalism have shifted?
The Center for Media at Risk’s Undergraduate Fellowship offers funding and mentorship for undergraduate students to pursue a research project, longform investigative piece, or multimedia art project related to media and risk.
